Active Assailant and Hostile Events - Considerations for Healthcare Facilities Developing Plans and Exercises

As the prevalence of violence in the healthcare setting increases, many healthcare organizations have endeavored to improve their resilience by updating their active assailant and hostile event response plans and performing exercises. Planning and exercising are hallmarks of effective emergency management programs as they allow staff to experience a disaster before it occurs for real. However, there are some challenges that healthcare organizations must take into consideration when undertaking active assailant / hostile event planning, training, and exercising that are somewhat unique from other hazards we may have addressed in the past.

This session will provide with baseline data on active assailant and hostile events and discuss some of the origins of violence in the healthcare space. We will discuss hazard assessment and emergency operations planning as it related to healthcare workplace violence; examine the various training opportunities currently available and discuss the importance of an exercise design process that is realistic, comprehensive, and safe.
